Carto Weather

Live weather and 80 years of history on a map

  • A living map

Live conditions for tens of thousands of cities, with day and night drawn as they move across the globe.

  • A time machine

Drag the dock at the bottom to any day since 1940 and the whole map follows: pills, clocks, and the sun.

  • A year at a glance

Open a city, then its year calendar: average highs and lows, rain, snow and daylight for every week.

  • This day in history

Pick any date in the calendar to see how it played out in every year on record.

Data and maps

Weather data is stored in metric and shown in the units you pick in Settings. Pinned cities and settings are kept only on this device.

Privacy

Last updated 13 September 2026

CartoWeather has no accounts, no sign-in and no user profiles. There is nothing to log into, so there is no record of you on our servers to lose, sell or hand over. What the app keeps, it keeps on your own device.

Location

The app centres the map near you. It asks your browser or phone for an approximate location only — never precise GPS — and only while the app is open and only after you tap the locate button. Nothing runs in the background. If you decline, or your device cannot answer, the app falls back to an approximate location derived from your IP address by our own server. Either way the result is used to pick a point on the map and to choose the nearest cities, it is cached on your device for 24 hours, and it is not attached to any identity or shared with anyone.

Kept on your device
  • your temperature unit and clock formatcartoweather_settings
  • the cities you pinned to the map, and which is homecartoweather_user_cities
  • your five most recent searchescartoweather_search_history
  • the calendar options you last usedcartoweather_calendar_view
  • whether you have seen the intro tourcartoweather_onboarding_seen
  • whether you dismissed the install promptcartoweather_install_dismissed
  • a local visit count, used to time the install promptcartoweather_visits / _visit_counted
  • the offline city catalog and cached map data, so the map works without the networkcartoweather_catalog_db, _city_geo_db, _geo_db, _discovered_cities
  • the approximate location last resolved for you, cached for 24 hourscartoweather_ip_db

Clearing your browser’s site data, or uninstalling the app, removes all of it. None of it is sent to us.

Who else sees a request
  • CARTO and OpenStreetMap

Map tiles are fetched through cartoweather.com, so CARTO sees our server rather than your browser. Your IP address is not forwarded to them.

  • Google Analytics 4

Anonymous usage measurement (which screens are opened, which features are used) via Google’s gtag.js. No account, name or email is attached, because we hold none.

Weather and climate data is fetched from our own API, which forwards no identifying information about you to the upstream data providers.

Children

CartoWeather is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect anything from them.
